Meta appears to have shifted its approach, moving away from trying to directly compete with ChatGPT. Over the past year, Zuckerberg promoted Meta’s AI assistant across many platforms to curb ChatGPT’s growth, but this strategy did not succeed.
Now, Meta is refocusing its AI strategy on an area where it has historically excelled: capturing and holding people’s attention. In his blog post, Zuckerberg describes a future where personal superintelligence deeply understands individuals, their goals, and helps them achieve those goals. This aligns with a world where people spend less time on productivity tools and more time creating and connecting.
Unlike ChatGPT’s ambition to act as a “super assistant” that performs more tasks for users, Meta aims to fill the free time that users gain. While this approach might seem dystopian to some, it plays to Meta’s core expertise: maximizing user engagement and monetizing that attention effectively.
